Explanation:

The sculpture comprises of 2 large pieces of circle (each one is 10m tall), placed side by side, gently and parallely swivel upward. It symbolizes the joint efforts and seamless corporation of Chinese and Singaporean teams from concept formulating to planning, and then to development. In short seven years, it has built the SIP from scratch to what it is today. In years to come, the bright future can be anticipated.

The sculpture is in the shape of a square in a circle. It represents:
1) As an old Chinese saying that a gentleman should be squarish inside (stick to principles) and a circle outside (flexible and considerate).

2) As an old Chinese idiom described that : heaven is a circle and the earth is a square. It teaches us that, handling of issues, we have to open up our mind and vision and try to learn from the principles of the Universe.

3) Chinese coins were in the shape of a circle with a square in the centre for over two thousand years. The sculpture symbolizes SIP opens both arms to welcome business opportunities from all possible channels and will help businessmen from all over the world to create fortune.

4) The sculpture forms a shape of "8" from certain angles. It symbolize "prosperity" and "abundance" for SIP and its tenants

The sculpture comprises of a stack of 100 layers. It symbolizes that in this new century and new millennium, with "Harmony" being unveiled by leaders of China and Singapore, SIP from now on will be assured of a harmonious and prosperous smooth sailing.

CHINA SINGAPORE CO-OPERATION-
10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF SUZHOU INDUSTRIAL PARK
1994-2004

On 26 February 1994, the Agreement on the Joint Development of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) was signed by Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing and Singapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew in beijing.  It mark the birth of the joint development of Suzhou Industrial Park between the two governments.

The vision for SIP is to build an integrated, modern, garden-like hi-tech township of international standards. SIP will have its own commercial, residential and social amenities to complement the industrial development.

Industrial development of SIP began in May 1994.  Since the, it has progressed from strength to strength.  With the support of both governments, SIP has achieved a rapid growth of about 50% per year.

Industrial development is the foundation of SIP's development. It has since attached more than 1320 Foreign invested Enterprises with total investment exceeding US$20 billions.  SIP enjoys the highest average investment per project in China and has become one of the fastest growing and most competitive industrial parks in China.

The joint stamp issue is specially release to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of SIP and to record this significant and successful joint project between the governments of China and Singapore

The stamp design depicts the symbol of this close cooperation.

The sculpture stand tall in a scenic location of SIP as a visible symbol of the collaboration of the two governments and those involved in the project.  The sculpture, titled "Harmony" was officially opened in June 2001 by Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing and Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
